I rolled up to Cuba Mall with accomplices in tow around one. We wasted
no
time in setting up as the unions finished their speeches. Everything went
smoothly until we began experiencing technical problems with the PA. The
tables were spinning, but no sound! At this point the VUWSA kids turned up,
and we could see that a big crowd were just around the corner. Situations
like this are how I got my name. In a fit of desperation J. whacked the amp,
and suddenly we were in business!
Kicking off the proceedings with "For the Love of Money" by the O'Jays, we
launched into the anti-fashion parade. Name and Shame was the order of the
day, big disses fired at big brands who use sweatshop labour.
The crowd was the largest I've seen at an event of this kind, around 200 by
most accounts, full carnival atmosphere in effect with lots of banners and
costumes. Good to see such a diverse bunch of yout' showing that they care
about the world.
Crazy lady on the stage aside, things went off without a hitch. The
highlight was when emcees Imon Star and Mana stepped to the mic, freestylin'
for solidarity; we messed up the place.
Heathens like Reagan used to say there was no such thing as society
(therefore no need for welfare). Clearly, he had never been involved in such
a display of unity by people brought together through a common empathy. Such
a feeling of community could never be ignored.
