The Ride/what's the story
Carlito + Addiction/High Contrast (Hospital)
3/5/2001

Another solid soulful-vocal release for Hospital Recs. "The Ride" is slightly techy with "don't want to stop" vox. Nice when it's rolling along but really good during breakdowns. The flip is interesting, with a swinging snare-heavy beat and the occasional lounge moment!

Solarize/Hypnotizin
J Majik/Future Bound + Recall (Infrared)
3/5/2001

J Majik's last comp/LP "Nightvision" was an excellent collection of varied but consistent tunes from himself and a few mates. This 12 is a sampler for J Majik's forthcoming effort which looks to be very good, considering the quality of his work of late. Here he delivers a BC-esque tune with layer upon layer of driving, filtered synths. The flip uses the old Aphrodite vocal sample with a simplistic bassline and clicking 808, but is nothing fantastic.

the brazil EP
DJ Patife + co (V Recordings)
3/5/2001

This one isn't out yet but I've heard most of it through mp3s and Active. "Pra Voce Lembrar" feat Max de Castro is, quite simply, awesome. I first heard it at Total Science, a beautiful moment. It has an almost P-Funk synth at the start then Max rolls into a fantastically soulful vocal that is usually beyond the means of drum'n'bass producers. "Sambassim" manages to combine a smooth guitar-driven samba with d'n'b without much effort at all. This one is on everyone's favourites list at the moment, and for good reason.
